It's that emptiness between two lovers in the middle of the night.
One rolls over in their sleep and they stop holding each other.
Their bodies let go long before their hearts ever wanted to.
It creeps up on them like the first cold day of winter, in the middle of September.

No one expects it.

And that's when the spring decorations go up in an honest attempt to fool the seasons.

And each other.

Their body temperatures drop from the lack of contact,
and even though they sleep more comfortably, the sheets know.
When the love sweat stops drenching the cotton, the bed cries out silently beneath them.
It begs for their sex to continue, but each time it becomes shorter and shorter.
Until soon, the lovers just lay down to fall asleep.
Then, they continue the charade with little kisses on the forehead and whispers 'goodnight'.
No one is the wiser.
Until soon it's just a grumble and eventually,
